Tarangire National Park, established in 1970, is a unique and captivating destination located in northern Tanzania. Covering an area of 2,850 km², the park is known for its dramatic landscapes, which range from acacia woodlands and riverine forests to vast savannas and wetlands. The park is a vital component of the northern safari circuit and offers a more tranquil alternative to the larger, more crowded parks like the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
One of the park’s defining features is the Tarangire River, which runs through the park and is the primary water source during the dry season. As water becomes scarce in surrounding areas, a large concentration of animals migrates to the river, making it a prime location for wildlife viewing. Elephants, especially, are drawn to the river in huge numbers, and it’s not uncommon to see herds of up to 300 elephants during the dry months.
