The Lemosho Route offers a stunning and scenic journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. This route combines diverse landscapes and gradual acclimatization, increasing your chances of a successful summit. Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you’ll be warmly greeted by one of our representatives and transferred to your booked hotel in Moshi, a charming town nestled at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro. Relax, enjoy the hotel’s amenities, and attend a detailed pre-trek briefing with your guide to prepare for your climb.

Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Elevation: 6,000 ft / 1,830 m to 8,700 ft / 2,650 m | Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 2-3 hours | Habitat: Montane Forest 

After breakfast, depart from your hotel and drive to the Lemosho Gate. After registration, you’ll start your trek on a forest trail requiring a 4WD vehicle to reach the Lemosho Glades. From here, hike through the lush rainforest, home to wildlife like colobus monkeys, and arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp for dinner and overnight.

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 8,700 ft / 2,650 m to 12,600 ft / 3,850 m | Distance: 16 km / 10 miles
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours | Habitat: Moorland 

The trail steepens as you leave the forest and enter the moorland zone, marked by giant heather and open skies. Pass over Shira Ridge, cross several streams, and enjoy stunning views of Mount Meru. Continue to Shira 2 Camp, set on the plateau amidst open meadows.

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 12,600 ft / 3,850 m to 13,000 ft / 4,000 m | Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Semi-desert 

From the Shira Plateau, head east toward Lava Tower (15,250 ft / 4,650 m), a significant altitude gain and an important day for acclimatization. After lunch at Lava Tower, descend into the Barranco Valley, where you’ll camp at the foot of the iconic Barranco Wall.

Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

Elevation: 13,000 ft / 4,000 m to 15,350 ft / 4,700 m | Distance: 9 km / 5.5 miles
Hiking Time: 6-7 hours | Habitat: Alpine Desert 

Today begins with a challenging climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep but non-technical ascent. Once at the top, follow the South Circuit, enjoying spectacular views of Kibo Peak. Pass Karanga Camp and continue onward to Barafu Camp, where you’ll rest, have dinner, and prepare for your midnight summit attempt.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak

Elevation: 15,350 ft / 4,700 m to 19,341 ft / 5,895 m | Distance: 5 km / 3 miles
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours | Habitat: Arctic

Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 19,341 ft / 5,895 m to 10,150 ft / 3,090 m | Distance: 12 km / 7 miles
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours | Habitat: Heath 

Depart around midnight for your summit push, ascending through scree and following switchbacks to reach Stella Point on the crater rim. Continue for another hour to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate your achievement before beginning your descent to Barafu Camp for a short rest. Then, proceed to Mweka Camp, where you’ll spend your final night on the mountain.

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Elevation: 10,150 ft / 3,090 m to 5,500 ft / 1,680 m | Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours | Habitat: Rainforest 

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and celebrate your achievement.
